…They also had some impact in jazz circles, though they weren't as significant as the Afro-Latin revolution initiated by Mario Bauza, Machito and Chano Pozo. Olatunji resurfaced in the late '80s on the Blue Heron label with The Beat Of My Drum, a release featuring a 17-piece band that included Carlos Santana and Airto Moreira. He subsequently recorded more sessions for Rykodisc, including a digital remix of "Drums of Passion." In 1997, He recorded and released Love Drum Talk for the Telarc label. In April of 2003, Babatunde Olatunji passed away after a lengthy struggle with diabetes.

While not a universally praised piece of the Art Blakey discography, The African Beat is quite engaging. Yusef Lateef is the only horn player, featured on oboe, flute, tenor sax, cow horn, and thumb piano with Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, but trombonist Curtis Fuller is only heard playing tympani – it was that kind of session. The drum ensemble includes Chief Bey, along with five other percussionists on conboro, log, and bata drums with penny whistles, gongs, congas, and African maracas. This is reminiscent of Lateef's more exotic sessions from the same time period, but quite unlike other Blue Note releases from the early '60s.

Mads Tolling is a Danish classically trained violinist currently living in San Francisco. After touring with jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and an eight year stint plus two Grammy Awards with the jazz string ensemble the Turtle Island Quartet, he is now on his own. His press release states that his new release, Playing The 60s, “draws material from the era evoked by the award-wining series AMC series Mad Men.” I’m not sure how much the series influenced the song selection, but Tolling manages to take an eclectic group of ‘60s material and give them jazz interpretations.

If it weren't for the high fidelity, Between Dogs and Wolves, the fifth long-player from British-born singer/songwriter Piers Faccini, could easily be mistaken for a late-'60s/early-'70s Harvest Records release, appearing in a display case next to Shirley & Dolly Collins' Anthems in Eden or Roy Harper's Stormcock. Richly detailed yet tastefully delivered ballads like "Black Rose," "Like Water Like Stone," and "Broken Mirror" resonate in a similar way to classic folk offerings from Nick Drake, Martin Carthy, and John Renbourn.

Shuffling drum beats, serene horn lines, and sweet vocal melodies all come together in the vintage sounds of township jive and South African jazz. Featured on the superb African Jazz n’ Jive compilation, these styles originally evolved out of a complex web of local and global influences. From traditional Kwela flute music and improvisatory Marabi, to bass-heavy Mbaqanga and very influential American jazz recordings, both township jive and South African jazz were born.

Time Life's AM Gold '60s series provides a highly enjoyable history lesson. Each year is represented by songs drawn from a wide range of sources, features all very big hits all the time and plays like an hour of true golden oldies radio. As usual with the series, you'll get a pretty good idea of what was going on in the charts from this disc and would be hard-pressed to find a better single-disc collection of hits from the year.

The Past & Present label presents a new kind of psych-rock compilation: Mindrocker. With the vast amount of '60s garage and psych compilations that have appeared from around the world in the last few years, it's easy to understand why so many fans of the genre have felt overwhelmed by the deluge. There are, however, a select group of compilations that are widely regarded as genuine must-haves for collectors of '60s singles. Alongside Nuggets, Rubbles, Pebbles, Endless Journey, Chocolate Soup For Diabetics and the Perfumed Garden, Mindrocker stands out as a treasure trove of '60s U.S. psych and garage music. Widely applauded for its high sound quality and detailed liner notes, courtesy of Hans-Herman Pohle, Mindrocker is widely-regarded as the launching-point of many a U.S. psych collection as well as an affordable way to locate rare singles by bands which went on to record classic albums for major record companies.

ABBEY ROAD 60s & 70s DRUMS provides astonishingly authentic sound as well as deep and detailed control. Everything you need to get the sound you want - from vintage to modern - is clearly laid-out in three control pages: Drums, Mixer, and Options. For that extra touch of realism, the parameters of volume, velocity, time, pitch, and EQ may be randomized. In addition, the ‘Exclude Direct Mics’ option allows the samples of the direct mics to be excluded from the randomization parameters. This lets you impart your drums tracks with subtle, nuances that avoid sounding automatically "randomized".
