The epic saga of Zatoichi begins. As tensions mount between rival yakuza clans, one boss hires a formidable but ailing ronin as his clan’s muscle—while the other employs a humble, moral blind masseur named Ichi. With its lightning-fast swordplay, sleight-of-hand dice games, and codes of honor upheld and betrayed, this first chapter sets the stage for all the Zatoichi adventures to come. And Shintaro Katsu brings author Kan Shimozawa’s blind swordsman to vivid life, making the character excitingly, indelibly his own.

The colossally popular Zatoichi films make up the longest-running action series in Japanese history and created one of the screen’s great heroes: an itinerant blind masseur who also happens to be a lightning-fast swordsman. As this iconic figure, the charismatic and earthy Shintaro Katsu became an instant superstar, lending a larger-than-life presence to the thrilling adventures of a man who lives staunchly by a code of honor and delivers justice in every town and village he enters. The films that feature him are variously pulse-pounding, hilarious, stirring, and completely off-the-wall. This deluxe set features the string of twenty-five Zatoichi films made between 1962 and 1973, collected in one package for the first time.

The viewer's immediate impression is that Zatoichi is an ordinary man. He wears simple clothes and isn't athletic. He moves slowly because he is blind, which makes it even more difficult to believe that he can defend himself. But those who attack him always die. He is so fast that most of his opponents never see the sword that is hidden in his cane. Some of them can hear it, but it is usually only a few seconds before their bodies collapse. Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman is without a shadow of a doubt Criterion's most ambitious project to date. I don't think that even during the DVD era there were any such special releases (the only one that comes close is the beautiful Ford at Fox box set). Naturally, I urge you to consider adding it to your collections, and by doing so let Criterion know that their efforts are very much appreciated. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

In the 1840s, Ichi, blind masseur and quick-draw swordsman, travels to the village of Itakura to pay his respects at the grave of Kichizo, a man he killed two years' ago. The villages in the area, after several years of famine, have struggled to raise 1,000 ryo in taxes they owe. The money is stolen while in transit to the governor. Ichi is accused as is Boss Chuji, a samurai Ichi respects. Ichi sets out to find the money and clear his own and Chuji's names. Along the way, he must face Kichizo's sister, some of Chuji's own gang, a corrupt governor, and his henchmen. Loyalties shift even as Ichi's moral compass stays true.
