This third volume of the complete orchestral works by the great French composer Maurice Ravel features his music for the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, his longest work, written for Sergei Diaghalev’s Ballets Russes. The company gave the first performance in 1912. Ravel depicted the characters in the story with great musical delicacy, and the Stuttgart Orchestra reflects this through the attention it gives to the score’s finest nuances. Ravel secures scintillating effects from the large percussion section that he uses, a clear nod to ancient music. The Valses nobles et sentimentales were composed at the same time as the ballet, which makes it an appropriate coupling. The version for piano, clearly linked to Franz Schubert’s similarly named waltzes, was published in 1911, with the orchestral version following one year later. Again the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra gives a thrilling, first class interpretation.

This penultimate volume of Joaquín Turina’s complete piano works features his “programmatic” pieces: music inspired by local scenes or texts by the late-Romantic poet and author Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836–70). The “tragicomedy” Recuerdos de mi rincón is a lighthearted divertissement with twelve mini-scenes that portray local characters from Turina’s Madrid neighbourhood, while La Venta de los Gatos brims with truly inspired and beautiful moments. El Cristo de la Calavera further reveals Turina’s deft touch for dramatic and picturesque style while faithfully adapting Bécquer’s story to include every detail. Originally composed for a stage drama, Navidad is filled with Christmas carols and traditional melodies.

Both accomplished soloists with impressive international careers, violinist Judith Ingolfsson and pianist Vladimir Stoupel began their successful collaboration in 2006. The duo devotes themselves to the discovery and performance of uncommon repertoire. The music of French composer Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is marked by lyrical lines and flowing harmonies. His elegant music is transparent and virtuosic. These two pieces were written more than four decades apart, and show turning points in the composers artistic life. The first sonata was the composers breakthrough hit. The success of this work unleashed an interest in his pieces across France. The second sonata is the first piece from the composers final period, when he wrote primarily chamber music.

Past centuries of Portuguese music have left a rich and varied legacy of repertoire inspired by various national and international aesthetic trends. Luiz Costa's teaching was influential on generations of Portuguese musicians, his Trio, Op. 15 representing his mature neo-classical style and including the most moving Adagio he ever wrote. The wide expressive range of Claúdio Carneyro's Trio, Op. 24 blends both modern and archaic techniques into a work of intimacy, joyousness and drama. Sérgio Azevedo is one of Portugal's leading contemporary composers, his Hukvaldy Trio drawing on fragments by Janáek to create an eerie interaction of past and present.

In 1891 Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé asked Debussy to compose incidental music for a theatrical version of his poem L’Après-midi d’un faune (The afternoon of the faun) and the resulting work, with its innovative melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic writing, is both impassioned and expressive. The four-hand arrangement was made by Ravel in 1910. Inspired by the natural phenomena of water, light and wind and, according to Mme Debussy, unplayable in its piano four-hands version, La Mer is a masterpiece of some stuctural complexity. Of the technically inventive Images, which evoke Spanish sights, sounds and fragrances, Debussy wrote that the work marked a departure for him, dealing with “realities” not impressionism.

Meyerbeer is best known for his spectacular operas, such as the Italian Semiramide and Il Crociato in Egitto that won him great popularity. Less well-known are his songs, of which 26 were presented in the first volume of this series (NX 2367). In this second volume the music covers a substantial period of the composer’s life with settings in French, German and Italian that explore the joys and pain of love, Arcadian idylls, and religious themes. Four of the songs are heard in world première recordings.
