Today we take high fidelity sound quality for granted, but how did it start? When was the moment when compressed and scratchy sound gave way to natural, realistic sound that captured the whole picture of a performance?
Decca Sound ‘Mono Years’ seeks to answer that question and shows how, 70 years ago, amidst war-time privations, a small team at Decca made technological breakthroughs that brought hi-fi to the world. This latest cube explores Decca’s earliest high-fidelity history, and restores some restores critically acclaimed albums from ensembles such as the Trio di Trieste, Quintetto Chigiano and Griller Quartet which have not been available since their original LP release more than sixty years ago. An equally impressive array of soloists includes pianists Clifford Curzon, Julius Katchen, Friedrich Gulda and Moura Lypmany and violinists Ruggiero Ricci and Alfredo Campoli. Several generations of cellists are represented with recordings by Pierre Fournier, Maurice Gendron and Zara Nelsova.

The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time.

2017 sees the 10-year anniversary of Simian Mobile Disco’s debut album, Attack Decay Sustain Release, and to celebrate, Wichita Records are releasing both the original LP, remastered and on double vinyl for the first time ever, along with a collection of B-Sides and rare tracks from the Attack Decay Sustain Release era available digitally for the first time, and also a special digital compilation Anthology: 10 Years Of SMD, featuring tracks selected by the duo from across their whole catalogue, showcasing the continuous aesthetic thread that runs through their diverse body of work.
This 19-track compilation focuses on Elmore James' crucial sessions recorded for the Modern Records subsidiaries Meteor and Flair between 1952 and 1956. At the time of these recordings, the distorted amplified sound of James' slide guitar with his unmistakable electrified Robert Johnson lick was helping map out the postwar blues idiom with such classics as "I Believe," "Blues Before Sunrise," "Wild About You," "Mean & Evil," and the extraordinary reworking of Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom" into "Dust My Blues." Even though roughly half of these tracks appear on the equally recommended 1986 Ace release Let's Cut It: The Very Best of Elmore James, this set is a great introduction to the dynamic slide guitarist's earliest recordings.
L7 had the sound, style, and tough-grrrl attitude to hit it big in the aftermath of grunge's mainstream breakthrough, but unfortunately, the band was too often hampered by uneven songwriting. The Best of L7: The Slash Years collects four songs apiece from Bricks Are Heavy, Hungry for Stink, and The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum (although, as the title suggests, there's nothing from the fine Sub Pop album Smell the Magic). It's a pretty good distillation of the cream of those records, even if there are still a few tunes on Bricks Are Heavy that could have made the cut on a less mathematically selected best-of. In fact, as L7's most pop-oriented record, Bricks Are Heavy is still a slightly more accessible introduction, since following that album, the band tended to rely more on sheer power than melody. Nevertheless, The Best of L7: The Slash Years does encapsulate what the group was all about, and it's a great way to dig deeper into their catalog without having to buy all the individual albums.

'The Zodiac Years' is a box set containing 3 Human Instinct albums - 'Snatmin Cuthin' (1972), 'The Hustler' (1974) and 'Peg Leg (The Lost Tapes - 1974/2002)'. All have been re-mastered from the original Zodiac tapes. As one of New Zealand's premier groups, The Human Instinct have contributed a large portfolio of illustrious recorded works to our country's musical landscape. The Human Instinct had it's origins in Tauranga in 1958 as the Four Fours, and after major local success became the first beat band to try the London scene. The band ended up performing on the same stage as some of rock music's greats including The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Small Faces, Spencer Davis Group, The Moody Blues and Manfred Mann. On the band's return to New Zealand it changed line-up to include Billy TK and Neil Edwards. The Human Instinct remained active through until the early 80s with its membership including some of the country's top musicians, exploring a range of musical styles.
