Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo records were quintessential New York soul labels. Their common link was Luther Dixon, who set Scepter on the right road with the Shirelles and followed up with success for Tommy Hunt, Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown. He split for Musicor in 1966 where he got the Platters, Tommy Hunt and Inez & Charlie Foxx back into the charts. Scepter/Wand had the bigger black music catalogue and dominates this compilation. It is the third in the recent Manhattan Soul series: across-the-board soul covering the 60s and the first half of the 70s.

Mystery Tracks Archives, Vol. 3 is Steve Vai's third installment of his planned ten-disc rarities retrospective, this time out collecting various hard-to-find Japanese bonus tracks, compilation cuts, and otherwise unavailable promotional tracks. Included is an edited version of the notorious "Kill the Guy With the Ball," retitled here "Speeding," and like most of the other tracks that appeared on import versions of Vai's albums, it's the type of shredding that folks have come to expect from Vai. The version of "Sofa" done at the Zappa's Universe concert, long out of print, is also included here. The most interesting tracks, however, come from some of the instrument demonstration cuts done for companies like Korg and Roland. On these tracks, Vai was inspired by (and constrained by) the sounds available to the instrument he was showcasing, and it leads him down a different path than that generally represented on his albums. There's far less bombast in these understated performances, and they really give a better indication of what a well-rounded player Vai can be.

Ultimate Rarities 1986-1991

By 1986 Queen’s flirtation with film soundtracks had pretty much come to an end. They weren’t prolific, but what began in 1980’s Flash Gordon with fill involvement with the film score ended with the band writing several original songs to Highlander and lending “One Vision” to the Lou Gossette Jr. flick Iron Eagle. The fifth volume of Master Stroke’s Rare Cuts series continues the documentation of Queen rarities, focusing upon some material from the A Kind Of Magic sessions and continuing with The Miracle, their final artistic statement in the eighties…

Ultimate Rarities 1982-1986

The fourth volume of Master Stroke’s six volume Queen Rare Cuts series documents remixes of tracks from Hot Space through A Kind Of Magic. It starts off with a “naked” remix of “Under Pressure.” It sounds like the basic album cut, but Freddie’s and David Bowie’s vocals are pushed to the center of the mix. The piano and guitar are also highlighted and the famous bass line is pushed deeper into the mix…
