Bach wrote three sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Scholars estimate they were composed in the early 1740s, possibly for Carl Fredrich Abel, son of Bach's colleague Christian Ferdinand Abel. They are paired here with Scarlatti's Gamba Sonata and a Violin Sonata by Handel. These works are performed by violinist Robin Michael, cellist Steven Isserlis and harpsichordist Richard Egarr in a program of haunting tranquility.

András Schiffs reputation as one of the great interpreters of the work of Franz Schubert is long-established. He has always maintained that Schuberts music is amongst the most moving ever written. Schiff underlined the point on his ECM New Series album with the C Major fantasies at the end of the 1990s, and he does so again on this remarkable recording, on which two Schubert sonatas, the Musical Moments, four Impromptus (D 935), the Hungarian Melody and an Allegretto are addressed on a period instrument, the fortepiano.

2008 digitally remastered edition of this underground classic. Sunset Wading was the first solo venture for former Caravan bass guitarist and vocalist John G. Perry. By 1976, he had left Canterbury's finest band and had ploughed a furrow as a noted session musician and a member of Quantum Jump with producer Rupert Hine. Sunset Wading saw Perry reunited with Caravan viola player and flautist Geoffrey Richardson as well as recruiting such notable musicians as Mike Giles (King Crimson), Rupert Hine and Roger Glover (Deep Purple). A fine example of mid-70's classic Progressive Rock.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. Those seeking Barney Kessel's legendary jazz stylings should look elsewhere. As a guitarist in the `50s, Kessel was renowned for his cool, bop-inspired playing in small quartets on sessions with the Contemporary label. But in the early `60s he signed with Reprise and embarked on a series of pop records. This was hardly new territory for Kessel, as he'd been backing pop musicians for years, and was a first-call guitarist for pop titans like Phil Spector; but as a front-man, this was a break from the jazz sessions he'd previously led. On his debut for Reprise, Kessel reinterpreted Henry Mancini's soundtrack for Breakfast at Tiffany's with a septet that included the superb playing of Paul Horn on saxophone and flute.

A great album recorded in 1963 for Atlantic – one of our favorite ever! Jack Wilson's one of our favorite piano players, and we rave about him all the time on these pages – and one of the reasons why we love him so much is that he was often accompanied by Roy Ayers, who started out his career playing vibes in his group! The pair together are a dream, and this album is arguably their best effort – filled with moody modal cuts, and lots of lyrical interplay that hits these beautiful high points, then dives into pits of darkness. Titles include "Harbor Freeway", "De Critifeux", "Corcovado", "Jackleg", and "Nirvana & Dana".
