This all-star session was put together by Down Beat magazine featuring the winners and runners-up from the magazine's critic's poll in 1957. While John Coltrane's name may leap out at you from the cover art, he only plays his tenor sax on half the songs here. On the remaining material Coltrane leads the orchestra, a new step for him at the time and a glimpse at an interesting early chapter of his history. And what an orchestra it was: composed of the best of the up-and-coming New York jazz scene, the other musicians in the Winner's Circle here include Donald Byrd on trumpet, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

The ninth and final album in Bethlehem's East Coast Jazz series, this 1955 release is the only one to carry an official title. Considered one of the best from "the father of bebop flute," the album features Most's sextet of the era: Oscar Pettiford and Burgher Jones sharing bass duties, Marty Flax on baritone, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Billy Triglia on piano and drummers Osie Johnson and Bobby Donaldson. Producer Creed Taylor launched the East Coast Jazz series in 1954 to differentiate the music emerging in New York from the new jazz coming out of Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The music of Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime”, achieved a newfound popularity in the mid-1970s, nearly sixty years after the composer’s death. Its beguiling synthesis of African-American syncopations and European musical forms is eloquently captured by Itzhak Perlman and André Previn.

Callas’s first stage appearances in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera came at La Scala in 1957, a year in which Milan also saw her in La sonnambula and Anna Bolena. As in this recording, made the year before, she shared Verdi’s most spectacular soprano-tenor duet (in Act II) with Giuseppe di Stefano. This was the last time Callas and Di Stefano appeared together in opera, though they reunited in the 1970s to direct I vespri siciliani in Turin and to give a series of joint concerts in Europe, the USA, Canada,South Korea and Japan. Gramophone judged this recording of Ballo to be ‘one of Callas’s most compelling assumptions’.

The songs of Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II have long been honored as some of Broadway's best and would be usually associated with large orchestras and/or exaggerated semi-operatic belting. But here Karrin Allyson defies the above stereotypes and sings these classic tunes in a subtle understated conversational fashion and backs herself with only a piano & bass.

An accomplished and classical pianist in his own right, Litton connected with not just the technique but with the vivid colors presented in Peterson’s harmonic soul. A Tribute to Oscar Peterson is a stirring improvisational riff on the man, the music and his indelible mark on the music world. The tunes are here but expected and somewhat eclectic and this is what makes the release special. Solo piano as a tribute to Oscar Peterson kicks it up a notch. Andrew Litton pulls it off with style, flair and a harmonic reach not as an imitation but as his own riff on the master. That is why this release works so well, it is from the heart.

Then all the winners were invited for a great concert which was a major event of New York's nightlife. This is the recording of the first Esquire Jazz Concert.
