Callas’s first stage appearances in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera came at La Scala in 1957, a year in which Milan also saw her in La sonnambula and Anna Bolena. As in this recording, made the year before, she shared Verdi’s most spectacular soprano-tenor duet (in Act II) with Giuseppe di Stefano. This was the last time Callas and Di Stefano appeared together in opera, though they reunited in the 1970s to direct I vespri siciliani in Turin and to give a series of joint concerts in Europe, the USA, Canada,South Korea and Japan. Gramophone judged this recording of Ballo to be ‘one of Callas’s most compelling assumptions’.

An accomplished and classical pianist in his own right, Litton connected with not just the technique but with the vivid colors presented in Peterson’s harmonic soul. A Tribute to Oscar Peterson is a stirring improvisational riff on the man, the music and his indelible mark on the music world. The tunes are here but expected and somewhat eclectic and this is what makes the release special. Solo piano as a tribute to Oscar Peterson kicks it up a notch. Andrew Litton pulls it off with style, flair and a harmonic reach not as an imitation but as his own riff on the master. That is why this release works so well, it is from the heart.

There is a story behind this concert – from the liner notes:
"In the 1940s Esquire magazine was one of the most popular news magazines of the American East Coast. Every year it organized a poll among its readers, who voted for the top musicians of the last year. Then all the winners were invited for a great concert which was a major event of New York's nightlife. This is the recording of the first Esquire Jazz Concert. You find, joined for one night, the most popular American Jazz musicians in a night-long jam session."

Throughout her time as a concert singer in 1960s America Miriam Makeba was promoted as the embodied voice of a sonic, imagined Africa. Where her white audiences were attracted to the complete „otherness“ of her African blackness, her black American audiences saw themselves – or imagined versions of themselves – put on stage, and built solidarities between their own struggle and the struggle against apartheid.

Miriam Makeba's sixth and final RCA Victor album largely abandoned the South African focus of her earlier recordings (particularly her most recent release, the joint LP An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba, which was devoted to songs in South African tribal languages) for a collection of mainstream pop on which she was backed by an orchestra conducted by Sid Bass.

Hardly a household name, jazz guitarist Joe Puma had a 50-year career as a sideman for other artists but rarely recorded under his own name. He was a favourite guitarist of Peggy Lee and Tony Bennett but recorded with dozens of other major names in jazz during his career. Puma performs here with Vinnie Burke on bass, Don Elliott on vibes, Barry Galbraith on guitar and drummer Todd Sommer. This album is part of the East Coast Jazz series launched by producer Creed Taylor at Bethlehem Records in 1954 to distinguish the new music emerging in New York from the new jazz in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Recorded at Memphis’ immortal Sam Phillips Studio with producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell), Rowe’s latest finds the singer-songwriter following oft-cited touchstone Richard Thompson along the forking paths staked out by Madman (2014), digging bold piano and sweeping strings, Gospel-soul, pastoral folk-rock and loping country-folk into his favoured earthy ground. Rowe’s rib-rattling baritone – fresh air and clean living continue to separate him from, say, Mark Lanegan – is as distinctive as ever, and despite some faltering moments (“I’ll Follow Your Trail”), he’s often exquisitely enigmatic (emotive high point “The Salmon”).
