With his smoky baritone and lyrics about wanderlust, romance, and European boot leather, British singer/songwriter George Ezra offers up a 21st century pop take on the wandering young troubadour with his debut LP Wanted on Voyage. Though he cites influences like Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, Ezra's music has more in common with the contemporary folk-pop of strummers like Vance Joy and Jake Bugg, with a bit of blue-eyed soul thrown in for good measure. Scrappy romps likes "Cassy O'" and his breakout track "Budapest" sit alongside quirky, synth-laden indie pop tunes like "Stand by Your Gun" and moody dirges like "Spectacular Rival," offering up enough diversity to keep things interesting.

Valery Afanassiev on “WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART” Today we are too fond of clear-cut solutions and exhaustive explanations. Writers and film directors are supposed to shed light even on those nooks and crannies which should remain dark for the sake of perspective. And readers as well as cinema goers should remain in the dark about this and that for the sake of the same perspective, the same space, the same labyrinth. Alas, there are no more dark ladies either in sonnets or in novels. We have forgotten the aroma of unanswerable questions.

A characteristic trait in Allan Pettersson’s music is the use of strong contrasts – shifts between an enormous intensity and calm relaxation, between complex and violently dissonant passages and peaceful, simple melodies and harmonies. This certainly applies to both works recorded here by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Christian Lindberg – the composer’s Fifth and Seventh Symphonies. Premièred in 1963 and 1968 respectively, these two symphonies contributed substantially to Pettersson’s public standing during the 1960s.

The songs of Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II have long been honored as some of Broadway's best and would be usually associated with large orchestras and/or exaggerated semi-operatic belting. But here Karrin Allyson defies the above stereotypes and sings these classic tunes in a subtle understated conversational fashion and backs herself with only a piano & bass.

Oscar Pettiford was not only one of the best bassists in jazz but was also one of the first to make the cello a solo instrument. Pettiford had to be considered equal, and possibly even better than Charles Mingus, when discussing the most important bass players in jazz at the time of this 1954 Hollywood recording. The quintet of Pettiford with Julius Watkins on French horn, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, pianist Duke Jordan and drummer Ron Jefferson are at their best supporting Pettiford who performs here on both bass and cello.

This all-star session was put together by Down Beat magazine featuring the winners and runners-up from the magazine's critic's poll in 1957. While John Coltrane's name may leap out at you from the cover art, he only plays his tenor sax on half the songs here. On the remaining material Coltrane leads the orchestra, a new step for him at the time and a glimpse at an interesting early chapter of his history. And what an orchestra it was: composed of the best of the up-and-coming New York jazz scene, the other musicians in the Winner's Circle here include Donald Byrd on trumpet, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

Considered one of the best from "the father of bebop flute," the album features Most's sextet of the era: Oscar Pettiford and Burgher Jones sharing bass duties, Marty Flax on baritone, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Billy Triglia on piano and drummers Osie Johnson and Bobby Donaldson. Producer Creed Taylor launched the East Coast Jazz series in 1954 to differentiate the music emerging in New York from the new jazz coming out of Los Angeles and San Francisco.
