Aerosmith - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Aerosmith (2007)

Aerosmith - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Aerosmith (2007)
Classic Rock, Hard Rock | MP3 320 kbps CBR | Covers | 60 min | 165 MB
Label: Geffen/Universal | Rel: 2007

Those who do not pay much attention to record company affiliations should be warned that this discount-priced album, billed as the "best of Aerosmith," represents only their most popular recordings made for Geffen Records between 1987 and 1994. That said, it represents them well, including all 11 of Aerosmith's Top 40 hits from the period ("Angel," "Janie's Got a Gun," "Love in an Elevator," etc.), plus the track "Deuces Are Wild" from the album The Beavis and Butt-Head Experience. This, of course, was the period when the bandmembers were collaborating with such songwriting hacks as Desmond Child, Holly Knight, and Jim Vallance to considerable commercial effect, maintaining the comeback they had launched with Run-D.M.C.'s remake of "Walk This Way." Those who do not pay much attention to sonic trends in the record industry should be warned that while the album was "96k/24-bit mastered from the original master tapes by Erick Labson," Labson's mastering approach responds to the tendency toward preparing music for its compression into MP3 files for digital downloading more than for old-fashioned CD audiophile listening; Labson has adopted a "push up all the faders" sound that is overly loud and poorly detailed; the late Bruce Fairbairn, original producer of these recordings, must be turning over in his grave.
Will Downing - The Best of Will Downing: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (2006)

Will Downing - The Best of Will Downing: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (2006)
Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Smooth Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 62 min | 144 MB
Label: Hip-O Records | Rel: 2006

Twelve tracks just aren't enough for a definitive overview of Will Downing's long career, but his entry in the 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection series makes for an affordable, right-sized introduction to the singer if you're wondering whether or not to explore this Luther Vandross-styled balladeer further. The song selection is well done and includes many great tracks.

Pop Rock, Punk, New Wave | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 00:43:52 | 103 MB + 5% Recovery
Label: Capitol Records | Release Year: 2014

This budget-priced Billy Idol compilation pales in comparison to lengthier collections like 2008’s Very Best of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself and 2001’s Greatest Hits, but there are enough of the big hits here ("Eyes Without a Face," "White Wedding, Pt.1," "Rebel Yell," "Dancing with Myself") to warrant at least one thumb up.

Freddy Fender's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection isn't particularly exhaustive, weighing in at only 12 tracks, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, since these songs provide a nice snapshot of the vocalist at his peak. His very biggest songs, including "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," are here, along with several country Top Tens that crossed over into the pop charts – namely "Secret Love," "You'll Lose a Good Thing," "Vay Con Dios," and "Livin' It Down." Though Fender did record other noteworthy material, much of it is noteworthy only after you've become a fan, and the conciseness of this collection makes it preferable for most listeners that just want the hits.–by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
