Atlantic Starr's 20th Century Masters may not contain every hit the group ever had, but it has all of the big ones, making this an excellent choice for listeners who want simply the basics. In fact, many of those listeners may find the very conciseness of this collection preferable to 2000's Ultimate Collection, which may contain more tracks but feels more padded. ~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Like any record company worth their salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when they see it, and when the millennium came around, well, the 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection wasn't too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it's hard to feel that way when it's used as another excuse to turn out a budget-line series. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it's impossible for any of these brief collections to be definitive, but they're nevertheless solid samplers that don't feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take Neil Diamond's 20th Century volume – it's an irresistible summary of his MCA years, rivaling the previous His 12 Greatest Hits.

Combining nu-metal with serious pop polish and structure, Alien Ant Farm always felt like a band that lived in two worlds: not quite heavy enough to be metal, but a little too fast-paced for the pop set. And while Alien Ant Farm's genre might be unclear, their entry in the 20th Century Masters series gives fans a bird's-eye view of their career and another opportunity to try nailing down what these guys were up to. Given the musicianship on tracks like "Movies" and their cover of the Michael Jackson classic "Smooth Criminal," while it might be hard to describe, it sure did work.

Yeah, Kingdom Come were a bit too enamored with Led Zeppelin on their first album, and their career didn't last much longer after that, but at the very least they were one of the very examples of what was storming the rock charts back in 1987-1988. Zep-styled riffs and that sorta watered-down boogie-guitar swagger were everywhere, and Kingdom Come were just one of the many bands getting loads and loads of criticism from purists. Oddly, though, the kids (for a short time) loved it, and the records sold enough to convince those at Polydor to release this collection of some of their more well-known tunes…

Pop stars have made Tim Hardin's songs famous, but his own versions have such soul and intimacy that they often eclipse the hits they spawned. 12 of his best are here: his original versions of If I Were a Carpenter; Reason to Believe , and Lady Came from Baltimore plus Smugglin' Man; Red Balloon; Misty Roses , and more.

Those who do not pay much attention to record company affiliations should be warned that this discount-priced album, billed as the "best of Aerosmith," represents only their most popular recordings made for Geffen Records between 1987 and 1994. That said, it represents them well, including all 11 of Aerosmith's Top 40 hits from the period ("Angel," "Janie's Got a Gun," "Love in an Elevator," etc.), plus the track "Deuces Are Wild" from the album The Beavis and Butt-Head Experience. This, of course, was the period when the bandmembers were collaborating with such songwriting hacks as Desmond Child, Holly Knight, and Jim Vallance to considerable commercial effect, maintaining the comeback they had launched with Run-D.M.C.'s remake of "Walk This Way"…

Eric Clapton's 2004 installment in Universal's never-ending 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection is an excellent distillation of his signature songs of the '70s. While it focuses on his solo recordings, it's not limited to them, throwing in two cuts from Derek and the Dominos – "Layla," of course, plus "Bell Bottom Blues" – which help complete the portrait of Clapton in the '70s. While there's a hit or two missing, they're not ones that will be missed and what is here is the cream of the crop of the first decade of Clapton's solo career.

Assembled with the cooperation of the band, Styx's entry in Universal's 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection series of discount-priced best-of's, surveys the group's tenure at A&M Records, where they scored most of their popular success. Of course, the early hit "Lady," recorded for RCA-distributed Wooden Nickel Records (and thus in the vaults of rival major label BMG), is not included. Neither are the Top Ten hit "Don't Let It End," or the Top 20 hit "Renegade" (mistakenly called a Top Ten hit in the liner notes). But the rest of Styx's big A&M hits – "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Come Sail Away," "Mr. Roboto," "The Best of Times," "Babe," "Show Me the Way" – are on the disc, along with several Top 40 entries and the popular album track "Boat on the River," from 1979's Cornerstone LP. –William Ruhlmann

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues–"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"–coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. –Daniel Durchholz
