Have you ever watched someone who is consistently exceptional at what they do? That isn't an accident. It took perseverance, a will to win, and massive amounts of time and energy. It took proactive, focused action, a strong belief in themselves and their potential. It was the result of building up a sustained passion for their vision and their goals. It was creativity, finding new and unique ways to make things happen. It was overcoming conflicts because nothing ever happens without some conflict.

From the very beginning, we as humans have developed tools and technologies to improve our way of life. With each century, revolutionary inventions across communication, transportation, documentation, and medical advancements, have altered our perspective on the world and our relationships within human society. The introduction of the internet and computers has given immense momentum, in which human relationships with technology are becoming increasingly reliant and intertwined. Mobile phones have almost become an extension of our body and with the upcoming developments in virtual and augmented reality, the threshold between the virtual and physical world is rapidly dissolving. This brings about fundamental questions regarding our ethics and morals.

Acting, Thinking, Feeling marks the first time that psychedelic jazz ensemble The Stark Reality's Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album has been reissued in full (the 2003 Stones Throw Records anthology Now only contained half of the original album's music). The anthology also contains the band's out-of-print Roller Coaster Ride (first issued as 1969 on Now-Again in 2003), and a series of recently discovered, previously-unreleased tracks in a 3 CD "complete works" box set. Besides the missing Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop songs, the most exciting additions to the Stark Reality's oeuvre are the three songs recorded between the earliest incarnation of the band the big band that recorded "Theme To Say Brother" and "Acting, Thinking, Feeling" in 1968 - and the slimmed down combo that recorded the Roller Coaster Ride and The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop. These recordings display a band in flux, and color the development of Stark's genius. We hear the signature sound of his "plugged in" vibes for the first time; we hear an early stab at the psychedelic "Red Yellow Moonbeams" (and realize why the addition of John Abercrombie's fuzz guitar was crucial to his vision); we hear a subtle change towards a more funk and rock based sound. This anthology thus encapsulates the first known Stark Reality recordings done for and in performance at WGBH, these transitional big band pieces, and the Roller Coaster Ride and The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop albums in full. The liner notes are updated with Ahmad Jamal's participation, more photos and full annotation of the additional songs.

Dick Hyman, one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians of our time, is especially known as an authority on early jazz. After a lifetime of playing and studying the music of Bix Beiderbecke, Hyman recorded this solo program of music associated with Bix, including all five original pieces Bix wrote for piano. Hyman arranged other numbers Bix performed with various groups and plays and improvises upon these in his distinctive, brilliant style. Thinking About Bix was recorded at Skywalker Sound in California using custom-made microphones, electronics and high-resolution digital converters.
