Deluxe Special Edition Double Disc Reissue. The first of a series of Marc Almond expanded re-issue CD s, Open All Night was originally released in 1999 and pays respect to the sound of Soft Cell whilst mixing in elements of R&B, gospel, Latin and trip-hop. Features duets with Siouxsie Sioux ( Threat Of Love ) and with former Sneaker Pimps vocalist Kelly Ally ( Almost Diamonds ). Features an 18-track bonus disc, curated by Marc Almond himself of original song demos, film soundtrack rarities and alternative versions of tracks recorded at the time of the 1999 Open All Night Sessions.
This single-CD reissue pairs two blaxploitation soundtracks by different artists: 1975's Cornbread, Earl and Me, composed by Donald Byrd and performed by the Blackbyrds, and 1973's The Dynamite Brothers, composed and performed by Charles Earland. Cornbread, Earl and Me, which featured the movie debut of Larry Fishburne, is serviceable, routine soul-jazz background film music, varying between funk-jazz-rock vamps (such as the Sly Stone-styled instrumental workout "The One-Eye Two-Step"), snazzy jazzy bits for action scenes, and sentimental orchestrated interludes. There are also occasional vocal numbers in a pedestrian mid-'70s soul-jazz-rock mode, such as "The Cornbread Theme."
At a time when Progressive Rock was just a fading memory for most people, a group of young friends in Holland started Picklelegaz around 1988, trying to keep the flame of Prog alive. Influenced by acts such as Marillion, IQ, Genesis and Pink Floyd, they soon started playing live and released two demos during the 90's, "Happiness" and "Stop Rewind, Play Forward". In 1999 the group released its first album "In Progress", very much in an early-80's Marillion vein. The intense live activity for the Dutch musicians continued over the next years, but their next album was destined to be released only some 13 years later. "Bedroom Circus" from 2012 is another great entry along the lines of melodic Neo Prog and Picklelegaz should be seriously considered by all fans of Marillion, IQ, Res Sand or Citizen Cain.
Promo CD for two albums in Demon Records' re-issue campaign of the mighty Elvis Costello back catalogue. 1994 promo sampler includes highlights from the 1994 reissues of Almost Blue (1981) and Imperial Bedroom (1982).
