Many critics thought the hitchhiker was a reference to Christ—Joe won't say; and many different allusions about the song and it's meaning (if any) showed up in the press from time to time. The album itself got great radio play, but was confiusing to stores and buyers because of the cover. Many thought it was the soundtrack to a movie—since there was no movie, the records wasn't adequately stocked. Goes to show what art can sometimes do to an album release.

"Uhuru" is one of two albums of "Harlem Bush Music" recorded in November of 1970 and January of 1971 by Gary Bartz NTU Troop. The title itself shows that soprano/alto Bartz and singer Andy Bey were moving toward a more expansive format to explore black consciousness within the realm of jazz. This righteously grooving mixture of jazz, funk, soul, and searching rhythms proves an essential and politically relevant entry in the canon of timeless jazz recordings.

Label: Bureau B

9 compact discs in individual card-sleeves packaged in a 5x5 blue box. Includes two informational booklets entitled '1971-1976' and '1977-1981'. Limited to 1,500 sets. This albums is a terrific compilation of some of the most essential experimental & electronic albums ever & reflective of the Golden era of Krautrock. If you have all the albums there is a live comp album of 40 minutes both about 20 minutes long, 1st track from '72 & 2nd from '77 that is unreleased & displays their more industrial side but as there is so little live work from Cluster from the '70's its a good addition.

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music
Recently on a buying trip to Brooklyn I scored a bunch of great records, both originals and reissues. The reissue of this album on Akarma knocked me cold, and continues to every time I play it. Belgium had an underrated and fantastic music scene in the early 70s, but Irish Coffee are the most impressive group I’ve heard from there, no question. What makes this album a masterpiece is the hard driving guitar work juxtaposed with quality songwriting and a bit of the Czar/ Stonehouse/Asgard UK vibe to the tracks. Czar and Deep Purple come to mind often, as does surprisingly a bit of early Spooky Tooth, yet Irish Coffee managed to create their own sound.

London's Stray followed up an eclectic eponymous debut with more of the same on their 1971 sophomore effort, "Suicide", which of course was just dandy since "more of the same" on this occasion essentially entailed another imaginative melding of different musical genres under the broad, forgiving definition afforded by the progressive rock tag. As to the album's rather negative title, it didn't foreshadow a radical shift toward the quartet's pre-existing heavy rock tendencies (actually, more keyboards were the hot novelty here) so much as a reflection of these songs' darker overall mood when it came to their lyrics…

Billy Jack is a half-Indian/half-white ex-Green Beret who is being drawn more and more toward his Indian side. He hates violence, but can't get away from it in the white man's world. Pitting the good guys, the students of the peace-loving free-arts school in the desert vs. the conservative bad guys in the near-by town, the movie plays definitive late-60s themes/messages: anti-establishment, make love not war, the senseless slaughter of God's creatures, the rape of society (figuratively and literally), two-sided justice, racial segregation and prejudices.
