February 10, 1961. The legendary Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. After a memorable performance in Berlin a year earlier, Fitzgerald was once again singing to a packed concert hall. Norman Granz, serious and to the point, introduced the musicians. Lou Levy had long been accompanying Ella. The quartet took the stage with the singer herself. In her fresh, almost girlish voice and that hint of characteristic impertinence, she launched into “Too Close For Comfort”, followed by “On A Slow Boat To China”. By now Ella had the audience firmly in the palm of her hand.

Familiarity usually breeds contempt, but in music, overexposure most often leads to indifference: attempts to revive a tired warhorse like Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major may attract the attention of specialists, but jaded listeners are unlikely to get excited over yet another acclaimed release and may pass it by without a thought. But when Joshua Bell performs – nay, resuscitates – the concerto, with the superb backing of Michael Tilson Thomas and the Berlin Philharmonic, listeners should take notice. Granted, nothing new has been discovered in the score, and there's nothing especially revelatory about the restored cuts in the Finale, which Bell finds significant.

The Bridge was the album that marked Sonny Rollins' return to recording after a three-year self-imposed hiatus that began in 1959. Rollins spent most of those three years practicing alone up on the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City: “I would be up there 15 or 16 hours at a time spring, summer, fall and winter”. The Bridge, his first solo recording after returning to performance, took its name from those practicing sessions. Consistently impressive is the interplay between Rollins and Hall, and the record is considered a classic by jazz aficionados today.
